Oh, the Tyres

Tried to pedal home from work yesterday but ran into a wee problem. Judy's tire was flat. And, of course, we had a bike pump but no spare tube or even a patch kit. So, after much thought, we hitched a ride from a coworker to a bike shop up the street and bought a "thorn-resistant" tube and a patch kit.

Retubing the tire went fine. We checked the tire for any thorn remnants, threw the tire together, tossed the old tube (not smart), and were on our way. About a mile into the ride, which was about a mile from the office and 10 miles from our house, her front tire went flat, again. Had we not just put a thornproof tube in? WTF?

It turns out that the tube valve had worked itself sideways and the tire rim had cut out a nice slice of rubber. And we didn't have a spare tube. And the patch kit was old school and didn't work.

Enter my lovely mother. While all of this was happening, she drove to our house to let our dog out, drove to her house to let her dogs in and get the SUV with the bike racks, and drove to the office to pick us up. The irony of it all is that twice as much gas was used driving cars around for our purposes than if we had driven to work ourselves. We had commuted to work to save gas. Beautiful.
